Kate watched out the front window of her house. A blue Mazda parked outside the front of her house. Four women sat inside. Kate opened the front door, and the women, dressed in black, shooed her back inside. A red Ford F-150 drove into her yard and parked in the side yard to the east. A small Honda with four more women parked out back. In a few minutes, Sally’s pink Cadillac, a remnant of her career as a Mary Kaye saleswoman, flew around to the south side of the house.

Sic’em barked at each vehicle and ran back and forth from window to window. “It’s okay, boy. I think they’re friends. It looks like they parked in the four directions: north, south, east, and west.” Kate looked at the dog as if he were a small person. “It’s a witch’s ritual. I’m not sure I like this.”

With his face just inches away from hers, the dog gave Kate a slobbery lick. He turned in circles and barked again.

“Sit, Sic’em. No. They’re friends. Friends, Sic’em. Aren’t you glad we’re on this dead-end street with only one close neighbor?”

A shadow passed the window and rapped on the front door. Kate opened it to Sally who was dressed in a black filmy gown with a black hat. “Say goodbye to that red suit.”

“It cost me two hundred dollars!”

Sic’em recognized Sally and stood up, wagging his tail. She walked into Kate’s bedroom and opened the closet. “Make some iced tea, do you have any food?”

“Not a lot. I’ve got beer bread, chocolate, veggies, and some fruit. Tea? Is this a tea party? What about booze?”

“Oh, that’s perfect, almost like you knew we were coming. Make some tea, not everyone drinks alcohol, Kate.” Sally threw her head back and laughed. “Don’t you like a good witch’s party?”

“Umm, no . . . not really . . . uh, I don’t know, never had one. What are they doing out there, are they building a fire? There’s city ordinances against fires after dark.”

“I’ve taken care of it.” Sally flipped through Kate’s closet and found the red designer suit with the short tight skirt. The plastic bag clung to the jacket in a futile effort to save it from destruction. “Oh, Kate, this is beautiful, such a shame.”

“Hey, wait! Let me save the blouse—I can wear it with other things.” Kate peeled the plastic off the suit and slid the blouse out from underneath the jacket.

Sally hurried into the living room and handed the suit out the front door. Four women stood under the streetlight, dressed in black. Some of them wore decorated hats. They chanted something Kate strained to hear.

“Darkest night, silver moon. Witches, witches, return to the rune.”

They cut the jacket with pinking shears into a long rope, much like peeling an apple. They held the rope high above their heads. The women cut the skirt and held it, too, above their heads. Soon the other eight women joined the first four, and they formed a long line, strung together with the red-suit rope.
